DS 9: THE POWER OF ELEGANCE
Positioned at the head of the DS Automobiles range, DS 9 is a graceful saloon. At 4.93 metres long, 1.93 metres wide and 1.46 metres high with large 690mm diameter wheels, DS 9 is meant to be dynamic and elegant. It sits on a new version of the EMP2 platform (EMP2 V2.3) with a wheelbase that’s not been seen before (2.90 metres), greatly benefiting rear passengers. Its steeply raked fastback style roof gives it enormous character and streamlines its silhouette.
A three-box saloon, DS 9 continues the DS Automobiles design language with a powerful and expressive front, featuring a grille with a parametric three-dimensional diamond-effect design framed by the DS WINGS that are symbolic of the brand. The signature lighting is characterised by DS ACIVE LED VISION technology with modules that swivel through 180°, emphasised by the “Pearl” motif daytime running lights. On the bonnet, there’s a “Clous de Paris” guilloche strip, the first time this DS interior signature has been used outside the cockpit.
With a nod to the original 1955 DS, DS 9 also has cone shapes at the outside edges of the black roof. Inspired by the legendary saloon, the cones have been reshaped to house brand new tail lights, signalling DS 9’s presence. The fluidity of an unbroken line is translated by a contour that flows from the grille over the bonnet, windscreen, roof and to the boot lid without being interrupted. The smooth sides are highlighted by the perfect way the flush fitting body-coloured door handles are built in, contrasting with a taut line that runs from the projector headlamps to the rear lights.
The purity of the rear translates the desire for every feature to be built into one piece. The rear wings, the badge and the boot lid are brought together with the same fluidity. Embedded in this, the chiselled lights have the effect of scales, creating a contrast to give a dramatic three-dimensional effect. They are highlighted by side strips, paying tribute to the design elements of the great French coachbuilders of the 1930s. The elegantly thin third brake light helps make the rear appear wider and extends the visual effect of the rear window.
L’ART DU VOYAGE
What if comfort in the back seats was the same as in the front? DS Automobiles is offering its leading expertise to DS 9 occupants.
The sophistication of quality materials applied to wide-open surfaces, with a dashboard completely swathed in Nappa Leather and the watchstrap design upholstery of the seats supplements the care that’s been taken over every detail, characterising French expertise. The crystal-shaped touch-sensitive buttons, the Alcantara® that covers the roof lining and the sun visors, the door handles and airbag in the centre of the steering wheel that are wrapped by hand in leather are an invitation to touch and feel.
With its long 2.90 metre wheelbase, DS 9 offers a huge amount of space in the rear. Seats are heated, cooled and massaging and complete with an adjustable head restraint, a first in the class. The central armrest contributes to the overall comfort, boasting features from segments above such as leather upholstery, storage areas with built-in USB ports, controls for the massaging seats and multi-coloured lighting.
DS 9 gives new meaning to individual comfort where each setting can be adjusted for an immersive experience. This special feature enables every passenger to be in control of their own on-board comfort.
The range is built around two levels of trim: PERFORMANCE LINE + and RIVOLI +.
DS 9 PERFORMANCE LINE + has a Black Alcantara® interior, symbolic of its stated dynamism and elegance. The bodywork has chrome badges on the front doors with the DS PERFORMANCE LINE logo, along with chrome DS WINGS and boot strip. The Gloss Black grille has the DS PERFORMANCE LINE badge above it. The 19” Black MONACO alloy wheels are enhanced with a Carmin centre cap.
In the cockpit, the seats combining Black Alcantara®/leatherette with Carmin and Gold stitching tie in with the centre console and dashboard that’s also in Alcantara®, immersing the driver in a hushed ambience. On the dashboard, the aluminium guilloche DS PERFORMANCE LINE badge demonstrates the unique expertise of DS Automobiles. The crystal inlays on the switches beneath the central screen emphasise sophistication down to the smallest detail. The multi-function steering wheel is in perforated full-grain leather with the airbag covered in leather and Carmin and Gold stitching.
Inspired by the Tuileries quarter in Paris, DS 9 RIVOLI + connects quality materials with premium diamond-shape trim. Three different interiors are being offered: Basalt Black Leather made of grain leather, or OPERA with, as an option, two colours of Nappa leather characterised by watchstrap upholstery seats in Rubis Red or Black.
OPERA’s elegance is brought to life by the Nappa leather on the front and rear seats, centre console, the door panels and the dashboard covered up to the headlining. The premium central rear armrest and the Lounge adjustable head restraints complete the comfort on offer to the rear seats.
The quality of the materials stimulates the senses with a full-grain leather steering wheel, the gear lever in smooth leather, the door handles covered in leather, aluminium touches on the pedals and central console, the Alcantara® roof lining, sun visors and rear shelf and the “pearl” stitching inspired by high fashion.
Resulting from research undertaken since the Brand’s launch, acoustic comfort is taken to a new level with a special treatment designed to suppress exterior noise. Laminated acoustic glass combines with a weld-bonded body that eliminates vibrations. Enjoyment is enhanced with a 515W FOCAL Electra® sound system, specially developed for DS 9 and benefiting from new stainless-steel tweeter grilles among the fourteen speakers perfectly positioned around the cockpit for a listening experience worthy of an auditorium.
At first, DS 9 will be offered with an E-TENSE plug-in hybrid powertrain comprising a PureTech turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor with a total of 225 horsepower and capable of covering 48 kilometres (WLTP) in zero emissions mode courtesy of an 11.9kWh battery. The CO2 emissions are between 33 and 35g/km depending on specification with consumption rated at 1.5l/100km on the WLTP combined cycle.
The electric motor, through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, has a maximum power of 110hp and 320Nm. It is used for starting from a standstill, boosting acceleration at any speed and for driving in zero emissions mode at speeds up to 135km/h. Electric mode is always automatically selected on start-up. It is complemented by a Hybrid mode, designed to automatically manage the different types of energy by driving 100% electric, 100% petrol or combining the two if the situation requires it. The car’s occupants won’t notice the transitions. An E-TENSE Sport mode provides the maximum power from the combined combustion engine and electric motor by adjusting the mapping of the accelerator pedal, gearbox, steering and active suspension. It intensifies driver enjoyment and dynamics in complete safety.
DS 9 utilises an energy recovery system that charges the battery while driving when you decelerate or brake. In addition, an E-Save function guarantees there’s always some energy in the battery to do part of the journey in Zero Emissions mode (several levels available), for example when the driver knows they will be going into town centres. The 7.4kW on-board charger enables the battery to be charged in 1hr 45 from home or public charging points using the cable supplied as standard.
The line-up will shortly be topped by two more E-TENSE power units, with 250 horsepower, 2-wheel drive plus extended range capability, and 360 horsepower with intelligent 4-wheel drive developed with expertise from DS PERFORMANCE. A 225 horsepower PureTech petrol engine is also available. All models are offered with an automatic eight-speed gearbox.

Beyond DS LOUNGE, which is already a benchmark in its class, DS 9 benefits from the latest technology that make other models in the DS range stand out so much.
DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION
With DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION, a camera mounted at the top of the windscreen scans the road, while four attitude sensors, and three accelerometers record every movement and transmit them to a computer that can control each wheel independently to improve safety, serenity and provide ride comfort without equal. This 21st Century DS suspension combines the hushed comfort of a prestigious saloon with the dynamics of a Grand Touring coupé.
DS DRIVE ASSIST
With DS DRIVE ASSIST, DS 9 enables its driver to enjoy Level 2 semi-autonomous driving which lets them cover distances in the greatest comfort with improved levels of safety. Speed is controlled depending on DS 9’s surroundings. The system uses sensors to position the car precisely in its lane depending on where the driver decides by controlling the steering. Operational up to 180km/h (depending on the country’s laws) DS DRIVE ASSIST controls speed and direction, under the driver’s supervision, combining comfort and peace of mind.
Controlling the speed is done by adaptive cruise control which oversees driving in traffic jams: the car will restart automatically if it’s stopped for less than three seconds. If it’s stopped for longer, simply pressing a button or the accelerator pedal will see DS 9 move off with the traffic.
The onboard DS DRIVE ASSIST camera recognises broken and continuous lines. While driving, it’s constantly analysing the picture and working out what’s happening. It enables the car to stay in its lane, even the part of the lane wanted by the driver. If the driver wishes to re-take control of the steering, taking a firm hold of the steering wheel will override the system. It is also interrupted if the indicators are used. The system can be activated from 30km/h.
DS PARK PILOT
For parking, DS PARK PILOT will detect a parking place by passing it at speeds up to 30km/h. The driver then indicates on their touchscreen that they want to park, parallel or into a bay. Then there’s just one thing to do: keep the Park button pressed and wait for the technology to get to work. Acceleration, braking and steering are automatically controlled during either entry or exit of the parking place.
During long journeys, poor visibility or lack of attention often equal danger. To make driving safer DS SAFETY brings together six major functions: DS NIGHT VISION, DS DRIVER ATTENTION MONITORING, DS ACTIVE LED VISION, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and extended traffic sign recognition.
DS NIGHT VISION
DS NIGHT VISION is exceptional at reading the road at night. Its infrared camera located in the grille detects pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the carriageway up to 100 metres ahead. The driver gets a picture in infrared on their large digital instrument display and sees danger outlined in yellow, then in red depending on its seriousness. Alerted in this way, they can then react.
DS DRIVER ATTENTION MONITORING
Through an infrared camera mounted above the steering column and a camera at the top of the windscreen, this system continually watches the drivers eyes for signs of fatigue (blinking), their face (where they’re looking) and head movements for distraction, as well as the trajectory of the car over lines in the road, particularly wandering or steering movements by the driver. It can detect any loss of attentiveness by an abnormality in one factor – blinking of the eyes or erratic movements that aren’t in a straight line – and will automatically sound an audible alert while a warning will appear on the central screen, day or night.
DS ACTIVE LED VISION
In addition to looking good, emphasised by modules that light up and swivel through 180° in welcome, DS ACTIVE LED VISION adapts the beam’s width and range to driving conditions and the car’s speed. Lighting modes activate automatically. Parking, Town Beam (width of the beam increases after five seconds of driving), Country Beam (focused ahead from 50km/h), Motorway Beam (range increased from 110km/h), Adverse Weather (the power of the modules increases and intensity of the main projectors is reduced). The “turning headlight” function and High Beam (automatic headlight dipping) complete this feature. By lighting the road better and further ahead or with a wider light beam, the driver – and their passengers – enjoy greater safety.
